Student Assignments

(due at the start of class)

Chapters 1-6

  • Read the book, overview, and abbreviated outline.
  • Complete the chart for ch 1-6. A number of themes and topics are repeated in these chapters. For the themes and topics listed on the left side of the chart, mark the sections where they appear (with either a simple check mark or a short note). Blank lines are provided for any additional repeated topics which you may notice. Do any patterns appear in your chart? (Note: don't make this assignment too difficult. The chart should only take you 10-15 minutes, after having read the section.)

Chapters 7-14

  • Skim the book, overview, and abbreviated outline.
  • Chapters 9-14 are very different in character from ch 1-6 or ch. 7-8. Write a short explanation (no more than 1 page) of how the section of ch. 9-14 fits with the rest of the book. This should include: 1) a very brief summary of this section, 2) an explanation of how this section is consistent with the main theme and purpose of the book, 3) an explanation of how this section is anticipated by, and builds on, the main idea of the previous section (ch. 7-8).
  • Based on the page you have just written, suggest at least 2 applications for us today.
